But the punishment was not the same. The system needs work.

Re: This VAR bollox
In many ways, the Willian 'penalty' was similar to the Lanzini 'dive' for which he was banned - both players allowed themselves to fall over the outstretch leg of a defender who failed to make contact with the ball.
If Lanzini's was a dive, then so was Willian's. That's case law for you.

Re: This VAR bollox
Maybe an idea to have a co-commentator who isn't an ex player, so they don't come out with the "He's entitled to go down there' bollocks. They're too scared to call a dive a dive.

Re: This VAR bollox
The ref was obviously going by the idea that the collapsing/hurling yourself in the air was completely disproportionate to the contact and thus it was a dive and not a foul.

(Could you give both, by the way?)

It is just an ingrained habit for some players to dive.

I look at the first one with Willian. The guy makes a stupid lunge in, if Willian keeps running its a foul. It looks like he could have cleared the leg as well, is he required to do that? Instead he leaps and then drags the leg.

But after that reaction from the ref, Pedro does what he does?

All that said, Pedro's is as blatant a dive as you will see but because he gets a yellow, he doesn't get a 2 game ban?

Messed up system and while I applaud the bravery of the ref. It has to be consistent.

3 dives 3 bookings sounds like 100 % success rate for ref. No need to go to VAR

Not that one, he clearly dived there, the first one where William got clipped , that was 100% a penalty and i hate chelsea

Neither were anywhere near being pens. VAR or not.

Re: This VAR bollox
I watched the scum game today. All three were dives, with Pedro the clearest; actually outragous.

There was not enough contact on Willian for him to fall over, and the contact on Morata was on his shoulder and could not possibly have launched him forward, so clear dive.

The TV blokes here are utter turds (English). The ex-Newcastle twat said there was sufficient contact for the player to go down. That's plain wrong. You go down if you get fouled.

PS; congrats to Morata for getting 2 yellows in 5 seconds. Great refereeing.

Re: This VAR bollox
As proven by tonights game you cannot use VAR for subjective decisions such as a foul/dive in the box.

As we've all seen countless times, you get two ex-pro's on telly asked their opinion on such an incident and as often as not they'll fail to agree.

Tonight all the pundits were in agreement, but it only took one bloke in a box somewhere to disagree.

It's stupid to use it for anything other than offences that are objective and virtually inarguable.

Mad Dog 12:26 Thu Jan 18
Re: This VAR bollox
Claret what do you mean "clearly a penalty"?

Touching someone on the shoulder does not cause them to fall over.
He wasn't pulled back, his shirt wasn't tugged. He was touched during a contact sport.

Re: This VAR bollox
Surely it’s flawed that the only person who can decide to use BAR is the same person that was sure they made the correct decision in the first place?

master 12:18 Thu Jan 18
Re: This VAR bollox
VAR: on field ref is same as now. No referrals to VAR. He makes decisions as now. He may make mistakes. But there's an extra ref, in a room, with live feed and 10 second, 30 second, 45 second and 60 second delayed feeds on 5 screens. If he spots something, he talks to ref and ref can change his mind. Obviously only for reds and goals because the play stops anyway. If an offside is given and it's wrong, tough shit. Only matters when it's not given and leads to a goal or red.

For the record VAR was not consulted on the issue.

Used the VAR

Not considered a "clear and demonstrable error" or something along those lines.

Did he not use the var claret? There were a few pictures up showing var replays.

Re: This VAR bollox
Var didn't help Chelsea. Willian went down in the box, and there were clearly contact. But he received a yellow for a dive. Must be drunk that ref sitting with the monitor

Re: This VAR bollox
Ref books CFC player for diving in the box , refuses to use VAR when it's clearly a penalty, funny stuff

Love the idea of the 15 second rule for substitutions rule. It makes perfect sense

Nobody likes timewasting & all the other methods of cheating by "running down the clock" illegally

The FA really need to clamp down on it heavily

At the end of the day, people go to football to be entertained by fast flowing football, not to see players rolling about as if they're at deaths door only to jump up & run about a minute later

I would suggest that rather than booking the goalie for not releasing the ball quickly enough (including dawdling when taking a goal kick), the referee should have the option to award a corner to the opposing side
